  1. Familyhotel Sonnwies Dolomites

South Tyrol, Italy

The iconic background of South Tyrol offers families the perfect spot to unwind, yet there’s still ample opportunity to take advantage of the abundant surrounding nature.

During winter, Familyhotel Sonnwies offers a free ski pass for the whole family to enjoy direct access to the magic carpet and ski lift that takes you up to the beginners’ 1km ski slope located adjacent to the hotel. For more seasoned skiers, you can also enjoy the free ski bus that takes you to the Plose ski resort just a short drive away. As well as winter sports, there’s a roster of wholesome activities available nearby, such as butter churning and cheese-making. Perfect for keeping older children and teens away from screens - for a while, at least.

After a busy day out on the slopes, you can recuperate back at the hotel. Little ones can be dropped off with childcare (you have access to 70 free hours), while parents can take advantage of the adults-only spa. Though, there’s also a family spa complete with cinema sauna if you fancy spending some quality time together. In your room, you can expect elegant glass fireplaces, saunas, hot tubs and balconies from which you can soak up those gorgeous vistas.

3. The Fife Arms

Braemar, Scotland

There’s a reason the Royal Family love the Cairngorms so much. Home to Balmoral Castle and Estate, it’s also an area of outstanding natural beauty, with ample opportunity for walking, winter sports and stylish hotels and restaurants.

One such spot is The Fife Arms, designed in classic maximalist style by Russell Sage Studio, based in the small town of Braemar,  the UK’s coldest town — it has recorded the lowest temperature on 48 occasions since records began in 1875.

Those chilly climes make the area an excellent choice for families looking for outdoor fun in winter. Nearby Glenshee Ski Centre offers the largest ski resort in the UK, with 36 runs across three valleys and 22 lifts, and the hotel offers ski and snowboard lessons at the centre from £135. The Fife Arms also provides sledges so you can enjoy the snowy hills of Braemar.

Following a day of exploring the picturesque Scottish Highlands, the whole family can warm up beside the Drawing Room’s roaring fire, wrapped in the softest of tartan blankets, with a delicious hot chocolate (or invigorating cocktail from Elsa’s Bar for the adults) in hand. Bliss.

A seven-night stay in a Discovery Family Suite starts from £9,065, based on a family of four staying in February 2026.
