Review: A magical family stay at Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club

There’s something rather magical about escaping to the Sussex countryside as a family. Especially when your destination happens to sit on the edge of the real-life inspiration for the Hundred Acre Wood. Nestled within the rolling landscape of Ashdown Forest, Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club offers a rare combination of a luxury UK stay that’s genuinely family-friendly, something that can feel hard to come by when travelling with children aged 4, 8 and 10 in tow.

Arrival

From the moment we drove up the long, tree-lined drive, the tone was set. The grandeur of the neo-Gothic country house is undeniable, but what truly stood out was the warmth of the welcome. Staff greeted us with genuine friendliness, taking time to chat with the children and immediately putting us all at ease, no small feat after a car journey with three excited explorers.

The family suite

Our family suite was a dream for travelling with children. Generous in size, it gave everyone room to breathe, unpack and unwind without that familiar feeling of tripping over suitcases. The bathroom was equally impressive, featuring both a large bathtub (perfect for post-adventure bubble baths) and a separate shower making the evening routine blissfully straightforward. It’s these thoughtful touches that make all the difference for families while traveling: space, flexibility and comfort.

Dining

Dining as a family in a luxury hotel can sometimes feel tense. But here, it was quite the opposite. The restaurant, overlooking the hotel’s sweeping gardens, struck a perfect balance between refined and relaxed. Parents could actually relax knowing that children were welcome, not merely tolerated. Breakfast each morning in the Anderida Restaurant was a particular highlight. Hearty and delicious, served with garden views that made you want to linger just a little longer. Even better, the calm, spacious setting meant we never felt rushed or worried about the children being children.

A special afternoon tea

One of the standout moments of our stay was indulging in a whimsical Hunny Pot Afternoon Tea, served in one of the hotel’s beautiful lounges. A treat for all ages, it felt like a proper shared family experience rather than something adults enjoy while children wait for it to end.

What made it especially memorable was the thoughtfully designed children’s version, which felt every bit as special as the adult offering. The little ones were delighted with their own selection, complete with juice or indulgent hot chocolate, a deliciously soft scone served with jam and cream, and the most charming honey pot shaped sandwiches.

The magic continued with an array of bee and honey themed sweet treats that looked almost too pretty to eat (almost!). But the true showstoppers, according to the children, were the cookies. Quite possibly the most indulgent and delicious they had ever tasted! It was one of those rare moments where everything felt perfectly pitched for families: fun, delicious and just a little bit magical.

Indoor & outdoor fun

The hotel grounds are an adventure in themselves. Expansive lawns for impromptu games, while quieter corners lead to hidden discoveries, including a charming secret garden that felt like stepping into a storybook. There’s plenty to keep families entertained on site, from croquet and tennis to a golf course and driving range. For those moments when parents might carve out a little time to themselves, there’s also a lovely spa waiting in the wings.

For water lovers, the hotel offers dedicated family swimming times too. A thoughtful touch that means children can splash and play freely, while parents relax knowing they are not disturbing those seeking a quieter stay. Of course, one of the biggest draws is the hotel’s proximity to Hundred Acre Wood, brought to life in the surrounding forest.

A visit to Winnie-the-Pooh’s house

A short drive took us to Pooh Corner, a must visit for any Winnie-the-Pooh fan when staying at Ashdown Park. After enjoying cake in the café, we explored the delightful gift shop, filled with beautifully designed maps and guides to help navigate the forest trails.

Armed with our map, we set off on a family walk to find Pooh’s house, along with the homes of Owl, Piglet and Rabbit. It was, quite simply, enchanting. The mapped routes are toddler-friendly, though it is worth noting the return stretch has a gentle uphill climb, so keep a little energy in reserve. We couldn’t resist a game of Poohsticks on the famous bridge while we were there. A simple joy that delighted all three children equally.
