Privacy policy
Last updated 21 October 2026
This policy explains what personal data The Parent Edit collects when you read our site, sign up to our newsletter or get in touch, why we collect it, who we share it with and the rights you have. We keep it short because we collect very little: there are no user accounts and we take no payments on this site.
1. Who we are
The Parent Edit (theparentedit.co.uk) is published by The Parent Edit, a sole-trader business based in England and Wales, at TPE HQ, Sake Ride Farm, Wineham Lane, BN5 9AG. We are the controller of your personal data. “We”, “us” and “our” in this policy mean The Parent Edit.
You can contact us about anything in this policy at hello@theparentedit.co.uk.
2. Information we collect
When you sign up to our newsletter
Your email address, which sign-up form you used (for example the pop-up or the form at the end of an article), when you signed up, and the version of the consent wording you agreed to — so we can show what you signed up for.
When you apply to be listed in The Address Book
Your company name, email address, mobile number and the description of your business you give us.
When you email us
Your name, email address and anything you choose to include in your message.
When you browse the site
- Server logs. Like any website, our hosting provider records each request — your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time — to deliver pages and keep the service secure.
- Analytics and monitoring, only with your consent. If you accept analytics in our cookie banner, Google Analytics and Datadog Real User Monitoring (when enabled) collect technical and usage data: the pages you view, how you arrived, your device, browser and approximate location (derived from your IP address), and page performance and errors. Datadog may record anonymised session replays in which anything you type is masked. If you reject analytics or don’t answer, none of this is loaded.
- Storage on your device. Your browser keeps a few small records for us — your cookie choice, which articles you have read (so continuous feeds show unread stories first) and whether you have seen or dismissed our newsletter prompt. These stay on your device; our cookie policy lists each one.
We do not ask for, and ask you not to send us, special category data (such as health information).
3. How we use your information and our lawful bases
| Purpose | Information | Lawful basis |
|---|---|---|
| Sending you our newsletter | Email address, sign-up source and time, consent wording | Consent (UK GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)); you can unsubscribe at any time |
| Considering an application to be listed in The Address Book | Company name, email address, mobile number, description | Steps you ask us to take before entering into an agreement (Art. 6(1)(b)), and our legitimate interest in running the directory (Art. 6(1)(f)) |
| Replying to emails you send us | Your name, email address and whatever you tell us | Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)): answering the people who write to us |
| Understanding how the site is used and keeping it fast and reliable (analytics and monitoring) | Technical and usage data (see section 2) | Consent (Art. 6(1)(a), and PECR for the cookies involved); only if you accept analytics |
| Keeping the site secure, preventing abuse and spam, and fixing faults | Server logs, form submissions flagged as spam | Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)): protecting the site and its readers |
| Meeting our legal obligations and handling legal claims | Any of the above, as needed | Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)) and legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) |
We do not use your personal data for automated decision-making or profiling.
4. Who we share it with
We use trusted service providers (processors) who handle personal data only on our instructions and under a contract that requires them to protect it:
- Vercel Inc. — website hosting and content delivery (server logs).
- Sanity AS — our content management system, which also stores Address Book applications.
- Exxo Labs Ltd — our technical service provider, which builds and runs this site and operates the Exxo Mailkit email platform that holds our newsletter list on our behalf.
- Resend, Inc. — delivery of our newsletter and other emails.
- Datadog — performance and error monitoring, when enabled and only with your consent; we use its EU region.
- Google — Google Analytics, only with your consent, with its advertising features switched off.
Some of our articles and pages embed content from YouTube (Google), Spotify, Instagram (Meta) and TikTok. When an embed loads, that company receives your IP address and browser details and may set its own cookies; it acts under its own privacy policy, not ours. Our cookie policy explains which embeds load when.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers. Brands we work with on sponsored content receive no personal data about our readers. We may disclose information where the law requires it, or to protect our rights or the safety of others.
5. International transfers
Some of our providers are based in, or access data from, outside the UK — for example in the European Economic Area or the United States. Where they do, we rely on UK adequacy regulations (which cover the EEA and organisations certified under the UK extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework) or, otherwise, on the ICO’s International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, together with any additional safeguards needed. You can ask us for details.
6. How long we keep it
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe. We then keep a minimal suppression record of your email address so we never add you again by mistake.
- Address Book applications: 12 months from your application if you are not listed; if you are, for as long as your listing runs.
- Emails you send us: as long as needed to deal with your enquiry, then up to 2 years.
- Server and monitoring logs: 30 days.
- Analytics: Google Analytics data for 14 months, then deleted automatically.
7. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data erased;
- restrict how we use it;
- object to our using it on the basis of legitimate interests, and to direct marketing at any time;
- withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting anything we did with it before;
- receive data you gave us in a portable format.
Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link, and you can change your analytics choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the foot of every page. To exercise any other right, email hello@theparentedit.co.uk; we will reply within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please contact us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
8. Cookies and similar technologies
We use a small amount of essential storage to make the site work, and — only if you agree — analytics cookies. Embedded content from other platforms may set its own cookies. Our cookie policy lists everything and explains how to change your mind.
9. Children
The Parent Edit is written for parents and carers. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has given us their details, contact us and we will delete them.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when our services or the law change. The date at the top shows when it last changed; if a change materially affects how we use your data, we will tell you — for example in our newsletter or on the site.
